Why is western culture considered modern culture?

While I've seen that many different countries tend to blend their own culture into this "modern culture" but everywhere you go that is considered "modern" by either other countries or themselves all seem to be heavily westernized. For example, Japan is considered an extremely modern country by most, but when you go there, it's quick to discover that it's also extremely westernized. There is English everywhere, western clothing is dominant over traditional clothing. ie) suits, and western dresses.

Now in non-western countries we find wedding ceremonies reflecting the white dress, black suit ceremonies of the west, and referring to their own weddings as "traditional", sometime even having two ceremonies. The traditional, and the modern (western), Indian cultures are a good example of this, where not only are the dresses very different in cut, but in colour as well. It's known that red is the colour used for brides as it symbolizes good luck, femininity, and happiness. While white is the colour for mourning, and widows. Yet, I myself have gone to east indian weddings, and other weddings that are from other cultures that as I said have two ceremonies. The Traditional, and the "modern" with the "modern" being western in nature.

Even when the red colour is kept, white is often worked in somehow. The something old, something new, something blue ect. ect. is done as well. And the dresses are all western cuts. Why?

Furthermore, while looking at "modern architecture" in countries like China and Japan that make claims to minimalism look almost identical to the pre-existing style of modernism that had already been well established in the west. An example of this is Gao Bo's minimalist house looks almost exactly like the pre-existing glass house by Philip Johnson. When not looking at high end architecture, even simple apartment blocks all around the world seem to look exactly like they could be plunked down anywhere from the US to the Ukraine and not seem out of place at all. Why is this? Why has western culture become "modern culture"?

When I travel I want to see other cultures, I don't want to see what I see everyday, yet that's what happens. What use is there to learning another language when English is almost everywhere? What use is bringing my camera when there are only certain areas that have cultural monuments? Why would I want to watch movies in another country when all you see is Western movies with subtitles? LETS GO SEE THE NEW HARRY POTTER! http://www.moviepostershop.com/harry-pot鈥?/a>

But I can do that at home. The most I've seen different are the Korean dramas which are almost all the same after a point, oh great, another soap opera, just in another language. Why go to stores to buy clothes and jewelry when it's all the same? It's frustrating, and all that's ever said is that it's just "modern culture". Harry Potter isn't modern culture, it's western culture, just like the fluffy white wedding dresses, and English, and cement apartment buildings, and jeans with leather boots, or angle food cakes. So why is has western culture become "modern culture"?Why is western culture considered modern culture?
cause everyone bites off of america. like john stuart said, america is like a santa that everyone hates. they say GIVE ME WHATS IN THE BAG AND GET THE **** OUTWhy is western culture considered modern culture?
There's different issues at hand, you mixed them all up, if you don't mind a long answer here it is:

1 - same-style apartment blocks, they have nothing to do with western culture, it's simply because it's cheap to build in concrete cuboids, plus, high-rises first appeared in America, and what's the point of innovating if the mainstream market accepts these western-style apartment blocks? They're cheap to design and cheap to construct. It's not about culture, it's about money.

2 - English is only a world-wide language because the Brits forced it upon the natives wherever they colonised, and they created the world's BIGGEST empire. if it was the Mongolians that overran Eurasia, we'd all be typing in Mongolian right now.

3 - In general? Which nation is the most powerful is also the most influencial, the English signs everywhere are to accommodate western tourists, because they can afford to travel half a world away to Japan. The past was the same - when China was powerful in Tang dynasty modern-day Japan, Korea and Thailand became Tang's contributory territories, and in turn they mimicked Tang's culture in the belief of advancing their own.

4 - Why is the modern world capitalist? Because the west gained power from it. Why is the modern world industrialised? Because the invaded nations needed to industrialise in order to stand a chance against the west. Why are more developing nations becoming democratic? Because the developed nations demand so.

Whichever culture is the most powerful is the most mainstream, does that answer your question? Why is western culture considered modern culture?
the west pretty much united the world through exploration and science. Things like guns, tv, computer, modern clothing are all from western people. if the modern world was korean, then we would be confucian, wearing hanbok, having a strict class system and etc. even things like drama were all started in the west. just the minor things like calculators, pacers and style are from the east. we are ruled by western thought
